Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
Under The Banner Of King Death: Pirates Of The Atlantic is David Lester’s second graphic novel published by Beacon Press, with a third in the works. All three are collaborations with two academic types, professors Marcus Rediker and Paul Buhle. Rediker is an historian and activist for a variety of peace and social justice causes, and Buhle, a long-time champion of radicalism, co-authored a graphic adaptation of A People’s History Of The United States with Howard Zinn. David Lester is, of course, a punk guitar player and proud high-school graduate who the professors are lucky to be working with, and they know it!
