Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
Some songs have specific purposes. Others are more nebulous and abstract. Some illustrations refer to emotional realms. Others include universal themes that alert viewers to a perspective. Pairing a new drawing of protest signs with a much older song about oil pipelines endangering wildlife seems like a good thing to do. Good, as in potentially useful in the way that art precedes change.
