Normal History Vol. 734: The Art Of David Lester

Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

Some songs are made more universal by being very specific. “I close one eye to lose my depth of field. I am so limited to the infinite unravel of the universe hinged to meaning in pattern and code.”

Uniquely described characters seem familiar. “Young drunk guys with wrap-around sunglasses sit near me at the back of the bus.”

“During WWII, men wrote home to women waiting. One man’s elegant hand on paper wrote: what I miss most is talking to you about the beauty of everything.”
