Normal History Vol. 756: The Art Of David Lester

Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

When the songs on Calico Kills The Cat were written, news came to us via periodicals, radio and TV, with TV being the most recent and also the most contentious form of swaying the populace to particular mindsets. Harshly rooted in consumerism, TV’s guidance in all things capitalism could be avoided by not owning one, thus giving us more time to move like we stepped out of Matisse’s Dance, albeit it on a somewhat wrinklier surface, and I mean that in the best way possible.
