Normal History Vol. 774: The Art Of David Lester

Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 41-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

The illo is obviously about the elephant in the room, which hints at what the song is basically about. Writing about the farm could be a metaphor for not writing about what is actually going on. No dis to Lois. It was very kind of her to write me a letter (in the 1980s). Perhaps the elephant in the room struck me this way because I was living in England at the time and the letter felt very much (to me) like it came from the USA, where elephants are frequently swept under the rug, but no more so than other places, I suppose, where pots are also often calling kettles names.
