MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Diamond Day’s “Summerland”

Béatrix Méthé typically gleans musical inspiration from fully formed lyrics. “Summerland” was an exception.

“The music took over, and I forgot about lyrics,” says one-half of the enigmatic Montreal dream-pop duo Diamond Day. “I only had one line by the time it developed.”

The line: “Heaven, seven secrets in a nutshell.”

Due out February 29, Diamond Day’s Connect The Dots is a self-released debut some five years in the making. After a chance meeting at a music festival, Méthé began a transcontinental collaboration with Boston-based Quinn Bachand in 2019. An impressive guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Bachand is also an integral part of Grammy-nominated fiddle virtuoso Jeremy Kittel’s band. But Diamond Day’s electro-fused take on shoegaze is a completely different animal. Co-produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Lansing-Dreiden, Violens) and Sebastian Kinsler (Feeble Little Horse), Connect The Dots boasts a strikingly diverse guest list that speaks to the album’s shape-shifting expansiveness. Contributors include Elijah Marrett-Hitch (Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa), Kenny Gilmore (Ariel Pink, Weyes Blood), Philip Shaw Bova (Angel Olsen, Bahamas) and Ariane Brunet (L’Isle).

The lyrics for “Summerland” finally came together when Méthé went to record the vocals. “We were deep into season three of Twin Peaks at this point, and I think David Lynch’s romantic galactic-parallel universe rubbed off on the song,” she says. “I started reading about space and stars and ended up writing about losing yourself in the obsessive behavior of ‘being a follower.’ Picture Agent Cooper floating in space—that image keeps me up at night.”

We’re proud to premiere Diamond Day’s “Summerland.” Tour dates below.
