The MC5 Was Dropped By Elektra 55 Years Ago Today For Running This Ad

55 years ago today, the MC5 was dropped by Elektra after running this ad in Michigan magazine Fifth Estate, protesting that local department-store chain Hudson’s wouldn’t carry debut album Kick Out The Jams because of its lyrical content. Though the label had nothing to do with the ad, Hudson’s pulled all of Elektra’s product in response, so the band got the boot, signing with Atlantic for its two other albums.
