Normal History Vol. 798: The Art Of David Lester

Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 41-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

As a songwriter in times of war, genocide and other large-scale atrocities, one wishes one had written a song that was somehow useful in stopping bombs and guns. One wishes that a song could somehow set things on a better course, because it seems like that should be the objective, until one is reminded that sometimes the overarching objective is, in fact, killing all those people, and that’s a hard thing for a song to go up against.
