A Canadian whose heart belongs to Appalachia, Bella White is one of the most promising voices among the latest crop of young female troubadours. And the Calgary native brings that voice to bear with impressive results on Five For Silver, available August 16 on Rounder Records.
For her latest release, White reunited with Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty), the Grammy-nominated producer behind Among Other Things, her 2023 album. Five For Silver is a covers EP that carries more weight than you’d expect, thanks to its soulful musicianship, sympathetic arrangements and White’s compellingly empathetic vocal delivery. Short and sweet, Five For Silver ambles gracefully through Neil Young’s “Unknown Legend,” Emmylou Harris’ “Luxury Liner,” Ted Lucas’ “I’ll Find A Way (To Carry It All)” and a bluegrassy reimagining of Lucinda Williams’ “Concrete And Barbed Wire.”
There’s also new single “Nobody Dies Anymore,” which is from Sukierae, Jeff Tweedy’s sprawling 2014 collaboration with his son, Spencer.
“It’s the first song I ever heard by Jeff Tweedy, and I was immediately hooked,” says White. “The lyrics are ambiguous yet potent, and the melody is soft and evocative. I’ve always found it comforting and beautiful—and I love that it’s off a record he made with his son.”
We’re proud to premiere “Nobody Dies Anymore.”
