Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 41-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to Mecca Normal if we were universally regarded as something other than an inspiration to riot grrrl. I ponder, but not very heavily, where we’d be now if another aspect of what we do took off in a different direction. Things could have worked out a lot worse, that’s for sure. Most of what happened wasn’t planned out in terms of anticipated results. Many decisions were made based on the fun factor. Years later, both David and I have taken to making very specific things happen, which doesn’t inherently diminish the fun factor. Other things did (in more universally existential ways).
