Jinx was supposed to be a comeback album for guitar-saturated power-pop outfit Superdrag, but the drawn-out recording process proved to be too tedious for anyone but the leader of the beloved Knoxville, Tenn., band. And so it’s come to this: a John Davis solo album that sounds an awful lot like a Superdrag LP. That’s certainly the case with “The Future,” the latest single from an album coming our way September 27 via Lost In Ohio Records.
“It’s one of my favorite recordings on Jinx, and it seemed like the logical opener,” says Davis. “There’s something about the verse that reminds me of the Everly Brothers. They lived around here for a couple of years before they made it big in Nashville. It’s not any particular tune or melody—it’s just a feeling.”
After the rest of Superdrag bowed out, Davis turned to Stewart Pack, singer/guitarist for Knoxville’s Pegclimber. The two had collaborated on past projects. Even better, Pack’s son Henry is a sought-after engineer and a great drummer. Just like that, Davis had his power trio, not to mention a father-and-son production team. Jinx’s sound is lean, mean and tuneful. Like the best Superdrag music, it hinges on the guitar.
“I like how the Strat is the first thing people will hear when they drop the needle,” says Davis. “We committed to that guitar like it was the only one we had.”
We’re proud to premiere “The Future.”
