Normal History Vol. 801: The Art Of David Lester

Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 41-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

Most likely the lyrics for “Days” were written on the spot, turning out to be mostly about sound, which gives me the opportunity to assign it any meaning I want to all these years later. Turns out no one is stopping me from connecting its meaning to an interesting Sim Kern video about the Khazar thesis, about which there is a lot of controversy.

In this case “I breath a place” means inventing a culture in a specific region conjured by the colonizing “I.” Followed by “the days,” which indicates time passing as a way to defend their presence. The idea to “take them all back” is a reaction to the previous lines that say, “I’m here now and have been for some time.”
