MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of People Years’ “If We Make A Town Again”

For their third album, Birmingham, Ala.’s People Years have opted to blow our human minds with a robot-inhabited sci-fi concept. And if that sounds garishly ambitious, Chris Rowell, the band’s singer/guitarist, can relate.

“If We Make A Town Again” is the second-to-last track on The Last Cantina, available October 18 via Cornelius Chapel. “It’s a daydream after escaping—a reflection point in our story,” says Rowell, who produced the album at his Hidden Window Studio. “The shock is wearing off, and new possibilities are coming into view—a simple-life fantasy. Talk of what’s next, what could have been and how it can be different next time. It’s a big ‘if’ considering the disrepair that surrounds them.”

In this infinitely amusing alternate universe a thousand years henceforth, the bots get high on “coded” weed and listen to bands like the Cure and Radiohead—music “particularly palatable to advanced lifeforms.” And, naturally, they worship People Years.

For what it’s worth, we dig ’em, too. And we’re proud to premiere their “If We Make A Town Again.”
