Overheard has its roots in New York’s Hudson Valley—specifically, a bar in Kingston, where Erin Barth-Dwyer and Will LaPorte bonded over multiple adult beverages. Adding Kenny Thomas on bass, the trio spent its early days riding out the pandemic. They held rehearsals outdoors, playing at least six feet apart as they perfected that bittersweet “soft then hard” balance between Barth-Dwyer’s delicate, fingerpicked avant folk and LaPorte’s forays into angular hard rock.
They met up with drummer Kenny Hauptman in 2022, after one of their many post-lockdown shows around the Kingston area. Hauptman connected the band with his old friend Dylan Nowik (Camp Saint Helene, Steady Sun), who produced Overheard’s debut LP, Intertwined, at his Pine Knoll Studio in Palenville, N.Y. It’s available October 25 on Dromedary Records.
Barth-Dwyer didn’t initially have high hopes for “Juno,” track six on Intertwined. “Dealing with identity and self-discovery, the lyrics felt too personal,” she says. “I also wrote this lush guitar part with the idea that it would stand on its own as a solo piece.”
The other three members of Overheard had other ideas. “They convinced me to let them layer in additional parts,” she says of her bandmates. “I’m so glad they did, because now I couldn’t hear this song any other way.”
We’re proud to premiere Overheard’s “Juno” video.
