MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of MacGregor Burns’ “Can’t Go Back”

To survive in a city like Los Angeles, you have to be creative. To that end, MacGregor Burns has held a dizzying variety of jobs to get by, from pet-relocation specialist and substitute teacher to water-polo referee and Hollywood tour guide. He’s also no slouch as a singer/songwriter—and other artists have taken note. Released earlier this year, Burnse’ debut LP, Paradise Motel, was produced by Ryan Pollie (Los Angeles Police Department) and features contributions from members of Little Wings and Mega Bog.

“Can’t Go Back” is the latest product of more recent collaboration with Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic), who produces and adds backing vocals to the alternately groovy and gut-wrenching breakup tune. Look for a full LP with Temple producing sometime next year.

“The song began as a practice groove with my drummer, Ethan Snyder,” says Burns. “I think we played it for 10 minutes before I started howling, ‘Can’t go back.’ It evolved into somewhat of a dance-rock anthem, exploring how the imprints of past loves continue to affect our lives. Luke’s driving bass line and radiant guitar solo push the song to an ecstatic, almost euphoric finale.”

We’re proud to premiere MacGregor Burns’ “Can’t Go Back.”
