MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Metal Bubble Trio’s “Holding Onto (Ft. theMIND)” Video

Not long after performing on the 55th Grammy Awards and leaving with two golden gramophones, Andrew Dost decided he’d had his fill of massive success. As a member of fun., he’d cowritten the ridiculously catchy 2013 hit “We Are Young”—and paid the price for unleashing the ubiquitous Song Of The Year on an unsuspecting public. The band that appeared to be having so much, eh, fun onstage that February evening wouldn’t make another album. The Best New Artist curse strikes again.

For his part, Dost receded into semi-obscurity. He began scoring films and TV shows, eventually moving from Los Angeles to Michigan. Back in his home state, he continued his soundtrack work and hinted at a solo album that never surfaced. He also began teaching aspiring singer/songwriters at the Interlochen Center for Arts.

Now more than a decade removed from the mainstream, Dost has finally resurfaced with the pandemic-inspired Metal Bubble Trio, an indie collective with pronounced jazz and bossa-nova leanings. To mark the unveiling of Metal Bubble Trio’s self-released debut album, Cucumber, we’re premiering the video for “Holding Onto,” a track that features Chicago-based rapper theMIND. The album’s ever-shifting lineup also includes Bleachers’ Evan Smith, Love Axe’s Chris Hatfield, Jordan “Bootstraps” Beckett, lap-steel player Seth Bernard, Detroit singer/songwriter Woman Believer, former Anathallo bandmate Matt Joynt and even one of Dost’s music students.

“When it came time to make a video, I wanted theMIND to be a part of it, but we couldn’t get together in person,” says Dost. “Somehow, out of a stew of ideas, came the metal-bubble puppets, which I’d built for a variety show I host every year. The album can be quite serious and melancholy, but I don’t really feel that way lately. So, we cooked up a little puppet plan, got into a nice space to film and broke out the Hi-8 camera we’ve been using to film songs in my studio. We got theMIND’s blessing on it and went from there.”

We’re proud to premiere Metal Bubble Trio’s “Holding Onto (Ft. theMIND)” video.
