Kevin Hanson’s connection to Erik “Smokey” Horvitz goes back to the early days with Huffamoose, the arty, unpredictable Philadelphia-based alt-rock quartet he cofounded in the early ’90s.
“He actually produced our first record for Interscope Records,” says Hanson.
Not discounting the occasional reunion show, the remnants of Huffamoose have never been far from Hanson’s orbit in the 25 or so years since the band’s ill-fated one-off tussle with major-label indifference. In fact, he’s retained drummer Erik Johnson and bassist Jim Stager for the Fractals, a band that often channels Huffamoose’s angular energy field and cerebral pop instincts—these days with Mike Frank on keyboards and theremin.
“Rescue” is the title track from the Fractals’ new four-song EP, available Friday. Hanson tapped Horvitz for the video—this time taking advantage of his visual chops. “Smokey’s animations are hilarious and soulful, and they perfectly capture our personalities,” says Hanson. “Even my stage moves have been influenced by the cartoons.”
For Horvitz, it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. “Anytime I can trick a band into making their song into an ‘Aliens Attack Earth’ story, I’m a happy animator,” he says.
We’re proud to premiere the video for Kevin Hanson & the Fractals’ “Rescue.”
