Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 42-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
OK, so this was a kind of love song, and the illo seems to be of the same ilk. From the realm of romantic love, where so much needs to be understood about human behavior to avoid disasters caused by manipulation, jealousy, control and other psychological proclivities.
Next week, Mecca Normal’s 1991 album, Water Cuts My Hands, will be released into the digital realm. Sans love songs; it’s more of a harsh toke of reality laced with shady behaviors that require sophisticated vantage points. Maybe that’s where the lovers in the illo are heading. For their sake, I hope so. Drop the tales of heartbreak and get thee to more sophisticated vantage points.
