MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Native Sun’s “Squash”

Native Sun’s latest single captures a particularly lucid moment of early-morning reflection.

“It came out of that strange in-between time—right when night turns into morning and the city’s switching gears—walking home alone after a night out,” says singer/guitarist Danny Gomez. “There’s a quiet shame and honesty in that hour, when the last stragglers and the early risers start to cross paths. Everything feels suspended, like you’ve stepped outside of time, and the noise in your head suddenly gets louder. During that walk, I saw a squash smashed on the sidewalk—something discarded but oddly beautiful. That image stuck with me. It felt weirdly fitting for that state of mind: torn open and exposed, kind of absurd, but real and still stubbornly there.”

Produced by Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Bodega, Snail Mail), “Squash” neatly encapsulates the New York City quartet’s arty, melodic take on classic punk and garage rock. Look for more from the band later in the year.

“Our music is relentless because the world is, hopeful because we have to be, and defiant because sometimes that’s the only way to stay sane,” says Gomez. “We’re not afraid to push, but it’s never noise for noise’s sake. It’s about cutting through with purpose.”

We’re proud to premiere Native Sun’s “Squash.”
