Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 42-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
I’m the kinda guitar player that, when the main guitar player creates a well-positioned pause for the benefit of the composition or the general mood of the thing, I feel an urge to barge in with a clang to claim that spot or otherwise destroy a too-pleasant symmetry in the name of punk. I suppose it’s the visual equivalent of adding splatters to an otherwise finished-looking drawing. Sure, it’s a risk, but if it’s not taken, the drawing might be less energized. Someone pass the guy in the illo a guitar! Let’s see what happens after he claims he doesn’t know how to play it!
