For many of us, the discomfiting tale of rejection and desperation that unfolds in the video for “Go” is all too familiar. “Our director, Liz Sadkowski, was really inspired by the raw emotion in the song and wanted to create something that felt both heavy and surreal,” says guitarist and band founder Andrew Merclean.
“Heavy and surreal” is also an apt way to describe the New Jersey act’s self-released debut EP, A Ways Away, available now. With help from producer/guitarist Patryk Sikorski and vocalist Allison Heckart, its five tracks assertively straddle the line between Evanescence-style alt-metal and indie rock.
“In the beginning, our music was more shoegaze and reverby, but that kind of got old for us,” says Merclean. “Lately, we’ve been moving in a more dynamic direction. It feels good to step out of the fog.”
Returning to the “Go” video, Merclean notes: “There are a lot of subliminal elements baked in and flickering through the band members as the main character emotes this collective feeling of struggle. We all have moments when we see red, and the energy of the song complements that feeling and color. It all breaks down to this feeling of letting go.”
We’re proud to premiere Royal Blush’s “Go” video.
