MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Reverse Yr Curse’s “Shoes Today”

“This song is literally and metaphorically about walking in someone else’s torn-up, worn-down shoes and experiencing how uncomfortable they must be,” says Reverse Yr Curse’s Bonnie Staley about the group’s latest single. “It’s about truly seeing someone for who they are and understanding how their life experiences have molded them.”

Staley and bandmates Matthew Park and Bret Payne are gearing up for the September 19 self-release of a debut LP, Where Are We Going And When Will We Get There?, that’s been some time coming. The arty, slightly askew indie-rock trio went about the recording process slowly, working with Alex De Jong (Snail Mail, Issac Friend) at his Spacebomb Studio in their hometown of Richmond, Va. Production wise, it represents a significant leap from Reverse Yr Curse’s self-titled 2024 EP. It also helps that the band came to the table with its sturdiest batch of songs yet.

The music for “Shoes Today” emerged from a jam session at the group’s practice space. “Sometimes there’s enough magic in those improvs that we don’t have to fidget with the arrangement too much,” says Staley. “I loaded the recording into GarageBand, and the melody and lyrics developed very quickly. But it really came to life in the studio. By adding the layers of vocal harmonies, guitars and synth, we brought it to a sonic level above what we’re typically able to perform live as a trio.”

We’re proud to premiere Reverse Yr Curse’s “Shoes Today.”
