MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of The Yum Yum Tree’s “My Corner”

The tattoo on Andy Gish’s left wrist says “Always Love.”

“It’s in my mom’s handwriting,” says the leader of Atlanta’s once-dormant Yum Yum Tree. “My mother taught me that if you really care about someone and they’re not able to be the best version of themselves, you should stand beside them, gently hold them accountable and support them. It’s not easy to do in a world where we write people off when they mess up.”

Recorded at Dan Dixon’s RCRD Studios in Atlanta and overseas at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in England, Turn Down The Noise is Yum Yum Tree’s first new music in almost two decades. Though the album recalls the wistful, interwoven guitar grind of female-fronted acts like Belly and Blake Babies, Gish weighs in with a measure of calm that only comes with successfully navigating the roiling seas of a chaotic world.

It hasn’t come easily for Gish, a veteran ER nurse who’s also worked in overdose prevention and harm reduction. She doubts she would’ve written a song like “My Corner,” say, 15 years ago, when personal accountability and responsibility were tougher pills to swallow.

“‘My Corner’ is about being on someone’s side—even when they’re unable to be on their own side,” says Gish.

We’re proud to premiere the Yum Yum Tree’s “My Corner.”
