Normal History Vol. 894: The Art Of David Lester

2:30 a.m. and I’m watching a compact street-sweeper vacuum up debris from the crannies of a not particularly dirty road. It’s such a strange finessing of the environment considering what’s going on in the world, but I suppose many taxpayers want clean streets, possibly more than they want homeless people housed, tyrants toppled or gender playing-fields leveled.

Thanks to social media, we all have a better idea about what swirls in the minds of our neighbors, and I’m both amazed and appalled at the intensity with which general well-being (of people, animals, our planet) matters. To some, a lot. Others, not so much.

Indeed, what does that male homo sapiens in the plaid shirt want to do to that guilty-looking, and probably frightened, raccoon? And no we can’t have a singular homo sapiens without the “s” because that’s just the way it is, so pick yer battles.
