Captains Of Entropy’s “On Juno” has its rhythmic roots in a synthesizer that no longer exists. Keyboardist Mike Kanon wrote the song’s central bass melody on a Roland Juno-6 a number of years ago. The thing was stolen shortly after he moved to Los Angeles, but the idea survived, resurfacing during Captains Of Entropy’s early writing sessions. The song finally found its legs thanks to drummer Jason Young’s deceptively simple hi-hat work.
The result is a hypnotic opener to the psych-tinged jazz/rock trio’s upcoming self-released EP, Beatrice Comes Home. It balances meditative restraint with the playful sense of exploration that’s defined Captains Of Entropy since they first congregated in a West L.A. garage during the pandemic.
“We explored parts of this composition when writing songs for our first album, but Jason tied it all together during a jam,” says Kanon. “With ‘On Juno’ about to finally see the light of day, the pain of that stolen synth stings a little less.”
