A few too many drinks with strangers, a little danger in the streets and a decisive romantic encounter. The Courettes’ latest single is the recipe for a perfect night out. On “Killer Kiss,” the Brazilian-Danish duo is very much in the zone, bolstering its ’60s girl-group harmonies with enough sonic clatter to rattle the foundations of Phil Spector’s legendary “wall of sound.”
That combination of vintage pop sophistication and garage-rock abandon has been the Courettes’ m.o. since Flavia and Martin Couri began making music together in 2014, predating their marriage by a year. Feeding off its punk roots, the duo has considerably more firepower than its two-person lineup might suggest, thanks to Flávia’s fuzz-drenched guitar and Martin’s authority behind the drum kit.
It’s an approach the Courettes refined over more than 800 shows in upwards of 20 countries. 2024’s The Soul Of The Fabulous Courettes widened the pair’s stylistic reach with richer vocal arrangements and deeper retro influences. Alternately lush and lascivious,“Killer Kiss” builds on that foundation. It’s a tantalizing first taste of the Courettes’ upcoming album, Fuck Yous & Heartbreaks, due next year via Wicked Cool. The accompanying video for “Killer Kiss” is like a hazy, color-saturated hangover that hurts so good.
“It’s dreamy, with faded memories,” says Flávia Couri. “So jump on for a night ride—and never mind the lipstick mark on your record player.”
We’re proud to premiere the Courettes’ “Killer Kiss” video.
