GUEST EDITOR

From The Desk Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe: Höga Nord Rekords, Part 1

From The Desk Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s Anton Newcombe: “I was asked to be a guest editor for MAGNET, one of the few publications I still respect since it was founded, so kudos for that. I was told I could write about anything in the world that interests me. So I am going to focus on the rebirth of the do-it-yourself music labels. Just like me and my own label, A Recordings, they have a strong belief system about releasing vinyl. I wanted to present seven labels and what they are up to right now. My questions were very simple: Who are you, what made you want to buck the trends, and what inspired you to release physical products. Enjoy.”

Newcombe: Höga Nord Rekords …

Mathias Nilsson: Höga Nord Rekords is a record label from Gothenburg run by me and my companion, Gustaf. We have our office in our own second-hand record store called Music Lovers Records. We started Höga Nord Rekords two years ago with the vision to chart the best underground music available from all around the world. Heavily influenced by old Swedish DIY prog labels like Silence and Decibel but also foreign labels like Impulse!, Brain, Creation, Bomp!, Underground Resistance and Thrill Jockey. We just have one rule, and that’s to not have any rules. We release everything from fluffy psych pop to experimental acid techno as long as we love the music and that we feel that we can do something good with it. Our goal is to release mind-expanding music on beautiful vinyl records that people will enjoy forever.

Newcombe: Tross’ “Stig Berglings Saga.”
