For Stunt Drummer, the best moments often arrive when things shouldn’t work but somehow do. Much like the Portland, Ore., noise-punk quartet’s self-titled 2023 debut, the new Warm Up, Tiger (Cavity Search) is a potent collision of half-finished ideas, embryonic songs and errant riffs hashed out in a small room with minimal overdubs. Erik Becker shares vocals and guitars with Marty Buckenmeyer, and their playfully intense tug-of-war dynamic steers Stunt Driver. “Pool” is the perfect case in point.
“It came out in a semi-hot-flash hurry with a gallop and a tagline,” says Becker. “More words occurred later, forming the tale of impending doom that will eventually leave the valley where we live as one gigantic swimming pool, taking everyone with it for a ride.”
The band’s initial idea for the “Pool” video would’ve required at least a B-list Hollywood budget.
“The label said no to a caddy day at Bushwood, swimming lessons and a worldwide natural disaster,” says Becker. “In the end, we improvised and made it all happen in Florida, which is already a disaster.”
We’re proud to premiere Stunt Drummer’s “Pool.” Warm Up, Tiger is out today—and if you’re in Portland, check out their release show at No Fun.
