Film At 11: Arctic Monkeys

There are two things to be learned from the video for the new Arctic Monkeys single, “Cornerstone.” One: Alex Turner can really fill out a red sweater. Two: Arctic Monkeys can write a pop tune like nobody’s business. Filmed in front of a white wall with only Turner present, “Cornerstone” as a video is a lot like the Arctic Monkeys themselves: simple, unpretentious and just a little silly.

As much as Turner is a great singer/songwriter, the music totally rocks out on this tune, so where’s the rest of the lads?? Ray Davies could certainly turn a phrase, but I don’t remember him trying to approach this level of spotlight hogging in order to shift a few units. Maybe it was his gapped teeth that held him back? And don’t try to sell the “art” angle as justification, as this video just ain’t it. Great song though, still.
