From The Desk Of The Jescos’ James Jackson Toth And Timothy Bracy: Evan Williams Whiskey

JescoGiven MAGNET’s detailed coverage of the end of the Mendoza Line—a beloved, ragtag countrypolitan bar band that went up in flames in 2007—it only seems fitting that we have plenty of access to the formation of the Jescos, the new group featuring the Mendoza Line’s Timothy Bracy and Wooden Wand’s James Jackson Toth, as well as Bracy’s wife, singer Elizabeth Nelson. Bracy has found his rambling pub-rock foil in Toth on the forthcoming Remembrance Of Things Trashed, a debut album that guts it out for rock ‘n’ roll glory. Read our Q&A with Toth and Bracy.

James Jackson Toth: I’ve been loyal to Jim Beam since I started drinking, but due to recent economic woes, I began drinking Evan Williams as a relatively inexpensive alternative. I’ve grown to consider it a favorite. Great whiskey for the reveler on a budget, so long as you don’t mix it with anything. (Bad form in my house; don’t even try it.) When we go overseas, the Europeans always make fun of us for drinking bourbon, but I’ll always take an Evan Williams over ice over whatever piss-warm milkshake-like concoction they’re trying to sell me on. Next one’s on me!

This is solid bourbon advice. Evan Williams is way better than Heaven Hill (a bottom-shelf bourbon that comes with a free hangover) and just as good as Beam. For Rye, however, Jim Beam is your best (and usually cheaper) bet.

You know, I’ve wanted to comment on a similar subject on myspace for a while, so I’ll just pipe in now….First off, I’m a light weight drinker, a few beers or glasses of wine is a nice buzz for me. I’ve tried for years to “get” the attraction of hard liquors. I’ve sipped cognacs, top shelf rums& tequilas and perhaps a half dozen Scotches and really never took to any of them. Sweet, fruity tiki cocktails were more appealing. Then, last year for St. Patties day, I invested in a bottle of Jamieson’s for the occasion. After a few sips, (straight up) I was impressed by the subtle flavor notes of leather, tobacco and vanilla. And it’s incredibly smooth due to the fact that Irish whiskey’s are the only whiskey’s in the world distilled 3 times. It grew on me with every sip. It’s the only liquor I can say that I love. It also seems to be the other drink of choice on Denis Leary’s series, RESCUE ME, besides the ubiquitous Samuel Adams beer, another favorite of mine. But, a caveat. In a recent episode, Tommy’s dead father appeared to him, along with other deceased family members when he was drunk and chastised him for having no taste for drinking Jamieson’s. So, maybe the stuff is Irish junk, but I did try another brand once (Bushmills) and it didn’t do anything for me. I savor the flavor!
