Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward paired up in an on-a-whim collaboration for 2008’s Volume One, but even the title hinted at something bigger. Sure enough, the two are back as She & Him for Volume Two (Merge). Deschanel’s vocals are more complex on this album, while Ward continues to provide his signature folksy feel. Much in the same vein as their first album, this one is comforting in its warm glow of anachronism; it brings to mind a summer where everything is just a bit out of focus, full of floral dresses and bicycles with baskets.
