The Thing The Wedding Present’s David Gedge Likes Best: Indian Food

Gedgelogo1Over the course of a quarter of a century, Wedding Present and Cinerama auteur David Gedge has consistently documented the intricacies of interpersonal communication, mostly of the romantic kind. While currently writing new tunes in his tradition of celebrating romantic bliss and bemoaning lost love, Gedge is also revisiting some old flames. His label, Scopitones, last week released Live 1988, a double album of concert recordings from—you guessed it—1988, the second in a series of LPs collecting live cassettes that were sold at gigs and through their fanzine in the late ’80s. The band is also playing Bizarro, arguably the best Wedding Present effort, in its entirety during a tour that kicked off April 1 in San Diego. Gedge will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him and our 2005 career overview of the Wedding Present.

Gedge: Indian cuisine is my favourite food in the world, no contest. I could literally eat it every day and every night. But there are so many diverse and delicious dishes, you could have a different one each day of the week. It’s actually almost impossible for me to pass an Indian restaurant. The smell that lingers at the door draws me in and gives me a strange feeling of well being. On British tours, it’s not uncommon for me to force the rest of the band to eat a curry every night. I think the record is seven or eight in a row. My favourite Indian restaurant is actually Bangladeshi. It’s called Nazams and is in Leeds. Having said that, Indian food has come on leaps and bounds in North America since I’ve been visiting.

AMEN, brother. I feel like I just finished a royal feast after every meal.
2nd best may be an Indonesian Rice Table meals, or Ris Taffel in the Netherlands. It is to them what Indian is for the Brits or Mexican for Californians!
