Crystallized ‘60s rock with a dash of indie persuasion, Yukon Blonde’s U.S. debut is well worth the fuss it received in March. Formerly known as Alphababy, this Canadian three-piece revives retro-flavored hooks with indie popsmith smarts. Recorded in Vancouver with the help of Shawn Cole, Yukon Blonde’s 10-track release feels like a springtime road trip with the best of friends. At times lo-fi, at others psych/rock, the trio is able to intertwine the best of well-loved sub-genres into charming tracks like “Wind Blows” and “Blood Cops.” With a sound larger than its number, Yukon Blonde is upbeat but tolerably so, allowing for the listener to soar, then settle between the notes and riffs. While listening to the band’s songs, it’s impossible not to sway.
