On June 22, Philly’s legendary Roots release their ninth full-length, How I Got Over (Island/Def Jam). The album comes as the Roots’ core, Black Thought and ?uestlove, approach the top of the hill. Staring down their 40th birthdays, the duo has said that How I Got Over is an exploration of maturity, both hip hop’s and their own. Since signing on as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the Roots have made connections with many of the show’s musical guests, which helps explain the extensive lineup on How I Got Over: Joanna Newsom, Patty Crash and John Legend, just to name a few. This track reworks Monsters Of Folk’s “Dear God” and features the original vocals from MOF’s (and My Morning Jacket’s) Jim James.
