Through pounding piano and delicate, spot-on harmony, husband-and-wife duo Ben + Vesper has created an eerily honest and rich single in “My Father’s Eyes,” from the pair’s sophomore album, Honors, due out January 25 on Sounds Familyre. Inspired by Ben Stamper’s childhood, the song alludes to the stern, but equally compassionate, look he would receive from his father when he acted foolish. “I wouldn’t call it tough love, because he wasn’t play-acting or putting it on for a result; he was just being himself,” says Stamper. “My father has always been a severely compassionate and understanding man.” “My Father’s Eyes” plays as an ode to genuine, layered instrumentation, topped off with a spark of wit, all captured and relayed by nothing more than the magic of a single tape machine.
