Adam Goldberg’s Heart Grows Fonder For: The Mamiya Universal Press And The Graflex Speed Graphic

The Goldberg Sisters is the new musical project from Adam Goldberg, the always entertaining actor/filmmaker whose impressive resume includes the likes of Saving Private RyanDazed And Confused, Friends, Entourage, Zodiac2 Days In Paris and the Flaming Lips’ Christmas On Mars. The band’s 10-track, self-titled album (on Apology Music/Play It Again Sam) follows Goldberg’s 2009 musical debut, Eros And Omissions, released under the moniker LANDy. As with that project, The Goldberg Sisters finds Goldberg collaborating with Aaron Espinoza (Earlimart, Admiral Radley), though this time out, the duo was assisted by a handful of other musicians, including Goldberg’s girlfriend Roxanne Daner on violin. The result is a satisfying collection of effects-heavy, urbane psychedelia held together by Goldberg’s high-pitched, Lennon-esque croon. Goldberg will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Q&A with him.

Goldberg: The Mamiya Universal Press is my favorite camera. A weapon of a thing. Takes Polaroid backs, 6×7 and, notably, 6×9. William Eggleston used to shoot with the Super 23, its predecessor (the same but with rear bellows and no Polaroid attachment). I discovered this well into my hunt for one and felt further validated when I discovered such. Fairly reasonably priced lenses, cheap-ish bodies, the 100mm 2.8 is super sharp with stunning shallow depth of field. It’s another reason I’m broke because film costs money and expired, eBayed Polaroid costs more. I also love my Graflex Speed Graphic, the “Weegee camera.” You can shoot crime scenes in a flash or take your time with the focusing glass and be hard pressed to notice the difference in quality between its results and an $8,000 field camera. I know it’s trendy to say (is it? I’m old; I don’t know) but digital sucks shit. (And this from a person who has come to terms with digital movies; I like the Red.)
