The Soundtrack Of Our Lives’ Ebbot Lundberg Can’t Control Himself: Ping-Pong (A Sport)

We assume most MAGNET readers are already under the magical, musical spell of the Soundtrack Of Our Lives, but if not, 2011 is the perfect time to change that. The Gothenburg, Sweden, band just released Golden Greats, No. 1 (Little W/The Orchard), a 19-track compilation of songs from throughout the group’s career. TSOOL formed in 1995 after the demise of Union Carbide Productions, a great, punk-leaning band featuring vocalist Ebbot Lundberg and guitarist Ian Persson. Since, TSOOL has released five studio albums and a handful of EPs and non-album singles, earning a Grammy nomination for 2002’s excellent Behind The Music. Lundberg will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

Lundberg: According to Wikipedia, table tennis, also known as “ping-pong,” is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth using table tennis rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. In the the Soundtrack Of Our Lives camp, play is fast and demands quick reactions. A skilled  player—like drummer Fredrik Sandsten—can impart several varieties of spin to the ball, altering its trajectory and limiting an opponent’s options to great advantage. This is a very important sport for all the members in the Soundtrack Of Our Lives while recording. We do it because it helps let loose friction in brawls and arguments in the studio. Or maybe not.

The term ping-pong is also used in Asia at stripper clubs called “Ping Pong Shows,” which is when female or male strippers use their vagina or anus to “shoot” ping-pong balls at the spectators. This was a number that was banned in Denmark after a fan did this onstage during a Soundtrack Of Our Lives concert. It might have been an harmless attempt to entertain, but he set the ball on fire while trying to shoot at the audience, which led to a severe injury. The ball melted in his anus, and the poor fan was shortly thereafter picked up by ambulance. Fortunately, the guy survived and is still a fan. Wherever his shit hits. Ping-pong is, by the way, the most popular sport among people who are into TSOOL and Union Carbide Productions.
