MP3 At 3PM: 13 & God

The cross-continental triple-threat known as 13 & God is set to release its second LP, Own Your Ghost, May 17 on Anticon. Comprised of Bay Area art-rappers Themselves (Doseone and Jel, plus Subtle’s Dax and Antonionian) and venerable German electro-pop trio the Notwist, the collective recorded Own Your Ghost over three intensive sessions. The first was facilitated in Oakland by running a feed from a mixing board into Dax’s bedroom while the final two were recorded in the Notwist’s Weilheim studio. Own Your Ghost is the first record 13 & God has released since its eponymous debut arrived all the way back in 2005. Download the summery “Old Age” from the new collection below.

Smoking Popes’ Josh Caterer Needs You Around: Movies For One—Two Thumbs Way Up!

Aside from having the coolest name of any punk-leaning Chicago-area band since Big Black, Smoking Popes have been blessed with core fan base that refused to quit on the outfit. When leader Josh Caterer pulled the plug on the Popes in 1998, it came little more than a year after releasing what might have been the group’s best album, Destination Failure, perplexing many but apparently offending few. Seven years later, a sold-out reunion show in the Popes’ hometown was all it took to get Caterer back in a creative mood. From there, Josh and brothers Matt (bass) and Eli (guitar) pretty much picked up where they left off, releasing Stay Down in 2008 and compilation It’s Been A Long Day last year. The new This Is Only A Test (Asian Man) is a concept album that only occasionally comes across as such, with the 38-year-old Josh taking on the role of an angsty teenager to convincing effect. Josh and Matt will be guest-editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Q&A with Josh.

Josh: Going to the movies by myself is one of my favorite things to do on planet earth. Some people think it’s weird and lonely, like eating at a restaurant by yourself. But it’s not the same, because at a restaurant all the lights are on and people are looking around and talking to each other. At the movies, they turn the lights off and everyone stares at the screen, and if they talk, you tell them to shut up. Seeing a movie alone allows you to experience the film on your own terms without worrying if the person you’re with is going to laugh when you laugh or cry when you cry or make little distracting comments all the time. If I see a movie by myself and it’s really good, I’ll take my wife to see it the next day. She never makes distracting comments. Watching a movie with her is pretty much just as awesome as watching it alone, unless the movie stars Will Ferrell, in which case it’s going to seem a lot funnier if she’s not there.

Smoking Popes’ Matt Caterer Needs You Around: The Walker Brothers And Scott Walker

Matt: I don’t know anybody who doesn’t work in a record store who has ever even heard of the Walker Brothers, but they’re one of my faves.
This trio of Americans went to England in 1965 and had a couple of hits that were as big as anything the Beatles or the Stones were doing at the time. They weren’t really related, just some dudes from LA who sounded like the Righteous Brothers. It was the booming baritone of Scott Walker (not to be confused with the jerko Wisconsin governor) that drove their big hits like “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” and “Make It Easy On Yourself,” etc., until they broke up in 1967. While everybody else was getting into psychedelic rock, Walker started started a solo career singing songs about lonely people living in apartment complexes and interpreting French singer Jacques Brel’s songs for English-speaking audiences. His first couple of solo albums hit the charts, but the increasingly bizarre subject matter of his songs and personal issues put him out of step with the music-buying public. Scott went off the rails by 1970 and stopped writing. He started interpreting hits of the day and recorded a handful of country-rock-sounding albums to limited commercial success. Even on these albums, where you can’t even understand why he recorded them or what his motivation could possibly be, he sings his ass off. This guy has one of the best voices in music history, no matter what he’s singing. In the mid-’70s, the Walker Brothers reunited and made two albums of covers of easy-listening hits before recording their final LP together, 1978’s milestone Nite Flights. Influenced by and subsequently influencing the kind of work Bowie and Eno were doing and featuring Walker’s return to songwriting, Nite Flights is a complete departure from what came before it. Mutant disco and creepy avant-garde ballads, these songs would set the tone for the rest of Walker’s sporadic and increasingly experimental recording career.
If you’re interested in checking these guys out, I would recommend a Walker Brothers hits collection and Walker’s solo Scott 2 as good starting points. Read MAGNET’s 2006 profile on Walker.
