From The Desk Of Laura Cantrell: The Radio Free Song Club

Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs Of The Queen Of Country Music is the fifth full-length from New York City singer/songwriter Laura Cantrell, and as you probably deduced from the album’s title, the LP pays tribute to country music’s first female star. Cantrell recorded the 10-track record in Nashville, the city where both she and Wells were born. Aside from covering some of Wells’ most loved songs, Cantrell kicks off the album with the title track, a song she co-wrote with Amy Allison. Cantrell will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with her.

Cantrell: It has been a real pleasure to be a contributor to the Radio Free Song Club, a shambling group of songwriters and musicians (Peter Holsapple, Victoria Williams, Freedy Johnston, Peter Blegvad, et al) who gather once a month to make a podcast of all new original songs. Hosted by former WFMU DJ Nicholas Hill and singer/songwriter Kate Jacobs, the song club is a Brigadoon where you arrive to make a radio show that will never be on the airwaves. Songs are somehow easier to finish when you’re going to get to play them with the likes of Dave Schramm, David Mansfield and the Radio Free All Star band.
