From The Desk Of Laura Cantrell: Scotland

Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs Of The Queen Of Country Music is the fifth full-length from New York City singer/songwriter Laura Cantrell, and as you probably deduced from the album’s title, the LP pays tribute to country music’s first female star. Cantrell recorded the 10-track record in Nashville, the city where both she and Wells were born. Aside from covering some of Wells’ most loved songs, Cantrell kicks off the album with the title track, a song she co-wrote with Amy Allison. Cantrell will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with her.

Cantrell: I was back in Glasgow and Edinburgh on tour this year and was glad to see friends, hear music and eat a pub meal at Sloan’s in Glasgow in the middle of the afternoon. Something about the weather, which is still green in winter and blustery and temperamental in summer, makes you want to put that piece of tablet right in your teacup. It is funny and endearing to me that my strange country music career began when I left Nashville for New York and got serious after Shoeshine Records in Glasgow put out my first album. An odd trajectory, but I’m glad that it means I’ll keep having a reason to come back. A second home.

The trio’s debut album, Out Of Love, will be out August 16 via Sub Pop. Says Thorburn, “The songs were dark and strange but oddly addictive. From The Desk Of Laura Cantrell: The Radio Free Song Club

Cantrell: It has been a real pleasure to be a contributor to the Radio Free Song Club, a shambling group of songwriters and musicians (Peter Holsapple, Victoria Williams, Freedy Johnston, Peter Blegvad, et al) who gather once a month to make a podcast of all new original songs. Hosted by former WFMU DJ Nicholas Hill and singer/songwriter Kate Jacobs, the song club is a Brigadoon where you arrive to make a radio show that will never be on the airwaves. Songs are somehow easier to finish when you’re going to get to play them with the likes of Dave Schramm, David Mansfield and the Radio Free All Star band.

Film At 11: Crooked Fingers

As if Merge Records kicking off its reissue campaign of all four of Archers Of Loaf’s studio albums on August 2 with the release of the band’s excellent 1993 debut, Icky Mettle (read all about about the LP in our Lost Classics post about it), wasn’t enough for you, here’s some more good news: Crooked Fingers, the longtime project of AOL frontman Eric Bachmann, will issue Breaks In The Armor via the label on October 11. The 11-track LP, the sixth full-length that Bachmann has made as Crooked Fingers, was recorded with Matt Yelton (the Pixies’ live sound engineer) over the past year. Watch the trailer for Breaks In The Armor below.
