From The Desk Of Garbage’s Steve Marker: Henry Rollins

Garbage is back. And the band’s sound is the same—but different. Not Your Kind Of People (StunVolume) is the quartet’s first album since 2005, and the distance has got Garbage’s creative juices flowing in exciting ways. First single “Blood For Poppies” has the same driving drums, ripping guitars and biting lyrics as earlier LPs but a poppier hook, while “Battle In Me” is much angrier and, well, Garbage-ier. Not Your Kind Of People is a great fusion of the old and the new—and after seven years of waiting, we are pretty psyched the band is back. The quartet will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com for two weeks, but for those of you who need more Garbage, read our 20 Questions feature with Shirley Manson and Butch Vig.

Marker: Wake up! Do more, feel more, think more! Listen more thoroughly and thoughtfully! Do it again! He is like our generation’s drill instructor for the soul, and he should be president except he’s smart and thus disqualified. Listen to every one of the records he recommends (you won’t be able to, there’s too many), it will never make you sad that you did. And it may change your life. I worked the door at the club in Madison, Wisc., that the the SST Records bands played at, and man, the few times Black Flag came through was a fucking event. The cops were freaking out; they literally wouldn’t come near the place until it was over, it was so intense. Henry keeps that intensity going still all these years later, and that is meaningful to me.
