From The Desk Of The Spinto Band’s Thomas Hughes: House Industries

The members of Wilmington, Del.’s Spinto Band have been playing together since the mid-1990s, when they were still in high school. A decade and a half later finds Nick Krill (vocals/guitar), Thomas Hughes (bass/vocals), Jeffrey Hobson (drums), Sam Hughes (keyboards), Joey Hobson (guitar) perfecting pop sounds on the recent full-length, Shy Pursuit, in their newly built recording studio, scoring films, starting a record label and searching for the perfect cup of coffee. They will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with Krill.

Thomas Hughes: When we first began assembling our recording studio I finally found a use for my Charley Harper alphabet cards (excerpts of his work printed on 26 pieces of rectangular cardboard) by adhering them to the wall. I had long been a fan of his work, but during this process I became infatuated with the typeface that appeared on these cards. Eventually, I discovered that the font was called Neutraface and was designed by House Industries, which sounded eerily familiar but I didn’t know why. Struggling to recall this familiarity on the drive back home I passed a building whose old-fashioned sign I always loved. The sign read: House Industries. It couldn’t be. But it was. Yes, in fact, the people who created this impressive font were located less than a mile away from our recording studio. The coincidence was chilling. It turns out House Industries does a lot more than Neutraface. They are a globally active design firm that still keeps a modest office in little old Delaware. They have a unique style that is sure to excite fans of mid-century modern design, American exotica and ampersands. One thing’s for certain: The font of Shy Pursuit (and other Spinto Band related materials) seemed destined to be set in Neutraface.
