From The Desk Of The Album Leaf: Roland Juno 60

AlbumLeafLogoPerils From The Sea is a collaboration between Jimmy LaValle of the Album Leaf and Mark Kozelek. It’s a set of long, somber songs that melds LaValle’s spacious, orchestral electronic instrumentation with Kozelek’s forthright and world-weary vocals. They’re transfixing, often beautiful, sometimes unsettling. The collaboration grew out of mutual admiration. Kozelek had seen LaValle play a few times, both in his old band Tristeza and the Album Leaf, and was impressed; and he is a fan, especially, of Torey’s Distraction, last year’s soundtrack album from the Album Leaf. LaValle will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on him and Kozelek.

LaValle: I recently acquired one of these from my neighborhood music shop, Future Music in Highland Park (Los Angeles). I’ve always wanted one and have used them within various studios over the years. I was able to trade in a Korg MS2000 for it. I’ve been getting into its arpegiator and how easy it is to send it a tempo. For some reason, I never bothered to learn the power of midi routing/having a master tempo clock triggered via midi etc … I’m sure it’s easy, but it skipped me. My friend showed me that you can send the arpeggio clock in, of the juno a click track from your DAW, and there you go … Analog clock! It’s been fun to create some cool arpeggios for new inspiration.
