From The Desk Of Jon Wurster: Kiss Kicks

To call Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster “Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster,” while true, is a bit limiting. He also keeps time full-time (and tours constantly) with Bob Mould and the Mountain Goats, contributes hilarity to The Best Show On WFMU With Tom Scharpling and maintains one of the most reliably funny Twitter feeds. Superchunk is on the road supporting its 10th LP, I Hate Music (Merge); while traveling from gigs to home and to more gigs, Wurster filled some rare empty space in his hectic schedule by guest editing magnetmagazine.com this week. Read our brand-new Q&A with him.

Wurster: Look, I’m a 46-year-old adult, and I’m gonna wear some Kiss slip-ons if I wanna, damn it! A few years ago, Superchunk had the honor of sharing the stage with über-punk royalty Off! at a show at the Vans warehouse in Brooklyn. One of the perks was that each band member got to pick out a pair of shoes from the Vans catalog. There was no way I couldn’t get these things, right? The looks they illicit run the gamut from laughter (my parents) to pity (the woman at the hardware store). If there’s one thing these shoes say it’s this: “While the dude wearing these may be crazy, he’s also undeniably rad.”

Dave Grohl has these in high-tops, and though I’m envious, I rest safe in the knowledge that if the two of us are ever in a situation like this, he’ll still be undoing his laces while I’m being carried barefoot from the press conference.
