From The Desk Of OFF!: 1939 Skates

Some artists deal with the subject of mortality in delicate, reflective brushstrokes. OFF! bandleader Keith Morris confronts it roughly the same way a hungry pit bull meets a T-bone steak—with fang-gnashing ferocity. To wit: multiple compressed assaults from the band’s new sophomore salvo, Wasted Years (Vice). Because, at 58, the Circle Jerks/Black Flag vet (who still maintains a spin-off combo dubbed Flag) has faced his own frailties, overcome most of them, and simply accepted—then soldiered on—with the rest. Morris, guitarist Dimitri Coats, bassist Steven Shane McDonald and drummer Mario Rubalcaba will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on them.

1939 Rubalcaba: About a year or so ago, my buddy Dave Sweetapple from the bands Witch and Sweet Apple started a skateboard brand that emphasizes doing collaborations with bands and also incorporates using some great shape assortments. The decks are pressed on the best hard rock (no pun intended) Canadian maple available, and these decks are made to be ridden to the absolute max. I was honored when he asked one of my other bands Earthless to be a part of the debut trifecta release along with Graveyard and Witch decks to come out on 1939. The decks are out now, and they are stellar! Both the Witch and Graveyard shapes are on old-school spoon-nose pig shapes. The Earthless deck is a mix between modern size dimiensions mixed with a old-school shovel-nose/square-tail vibe, which makes it an all terrain monster and is the shape that I personally ride. The concave and steepness of the nose and tail is as sweet and tender as my local BBQ pulled-pork sammie! So, whether you wanna have these decks as wall hangars or full-on cruise/shredsters is up to you, but 1939 has you covered. Go check them out!
