From The Desk Of The Faint: M.F.K. Fisher

Nearly six years after the release of strangely desiccated 2008 album Fasciinatiion and one lengthy stroll down wait-is-this-a-hiatus-or-a-break-up? lane, the Faint has reemerged from the shadows to deliver up Doom Abuse—a vital, manic comeback triumph shellacked in an exquisite devil-may-fucking-care electro-sheen. Guitarist Dapose will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all wee. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

MFKFisher

Dapose: Her writing style is richly dense and flavorful. I love her books on food: Serve It Forth, How To Cook A Wolf, Consider The Oyster … She has a language that comes from the ’40s and ’50s that people just don’t have anymore. I wish that people I knew talked like they do in her stories. I do have a thing for culturally observed food writing. Probably stemming from Anthony Bourdain’s delicious No Reservations; also Michael Pollan and Annemarie Colbin’s book Food And Healing. It’s just endlessly fascinating to me to hear about historical cultural practices involving food. Good writing, and in Fisher’s case great writing, is like a window into another time. It is interesting to watch YouTube videos on how to make Roti indian bread, or learn how to make home-made sauerkraut. But Fisher tells of whole extravagant weekends with bizarre characters and interweaves historic knowledge right in the middle of cooking does and don’ts. It’s just like being on vacation with a bunch of people you don’t know but they are super interesting. She keeps you in this dream like unknowing and yet learning. I read every page more than once.
