GUEST EDITOR

From The Desk Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe: Fuzz Club Records, Part 1

From The Desk Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s Anton Newcombe: “I was asked to be a guest editor for MAGNET, one of the few publications I still respect since it was founded, so kudos for that. I was told I could write about anything in the world that interests me. So I am going to focus on the rebirth of the do-it-yourself music labels. Just like me and my own label, A Recordings, they have a strong belief system about releasing vinyl. I wanted to present seven labels and what they are up to right now. My questions were very simple: Who are you, what made you want to buck the trends, and what inspired you to release physical products. Enjoy.”

Newcombe: Fuzz Club Records …

Casper Dee: As a label, we focus on raw, experimental rock ‘n’ roll influenced by psychedelia, shoegaze, noise, garage, folk and blues. I started Fuzz Club with the intention of creating a brand that would embrace DIY. I love the rawness of things that have been created out of passion; it feels honest in comparison to most of the mainstream culture, which just feels pale. This is why we use a lot of hand-made elements and focus on producing unique, high-quality products, rather than something off a production line.

I’m a record collector myself, so releasing things on vinyl was the only way. To me, that’s when it feels like you have a complete and substantial product with all its tactile qualities and the sound to match, whereas something released just digitally kinda feels disposable or like a demo. Plus there is so much love for vinyl. It’s outlived every other format, and even now in the digital age, sales continue to rise. You don’t pick a fight with something like that.

A part from that, we have upcoming releases, which includes A Place To Bury Strangers, the Telescopes, Singapore Sling, the Underground Youth, the Wands, Lola Colt, Dead Skeletons, Sonic Jesus and the Black Angels.

Singapore Sling “My Obsessive Love” video after the jump.
