From The Desk Of Dengue Fever: Gladys Tamez Millinery

MAGNET knows a thing or two about good music, art and interesting people, so when Dengue Fever was asked to be guest editors, we all replied within minutes: ”Yes, please!” We have had our noses to the grindstone as of late because that’s what you need to do when you release your latest full-length studio album, The Deepest Lake, on your own label, Tuk Tuk Records. It’s a hell of a lot of work, and us sitting down and writing about subjects other than ourselves sounded like a great respite. So thank you, MAGNET. Enjoy the info, rants and inspirations. Who knows where they’ll take you …

Senon Williams: Gladys Tamez found a love, and then figured out a way for others to fall in love with her love. Those of us that own her hat, really, really wanted to have it, had to have it. She is a single reason not to shop at H&M, the Gap or Old Navy. Once you wear one of her hats you understand the idea of being one’s self, not just with your head but with your whole body. I donned one of her hats for the first time about a year ago. I felt it had been hovering in space right at brim level, waiting for me to step inside of it. A bud not yet bloomed, but once noticed it opens up to a vibrant flower. Perfectly understated yet singular, she creates sculptures for the head. I can’t distinguish art forms and their different value on life. Reading or writing can be equally creative. Sculpting a block of stone or shaping a hat carries the same process of contemplation. A song or a painting each can hold a soul. This is the thing I am getting at with GTM. Gladys pours her passion into her work. She cares that what she makes has an effect on people, and is crafted by hand. Some can judge high fashion as hollow or superficial. Fine craftsmanship rarely gets readily panned; Gladys has found the lost ingredient between the two. When one of her pieces is held in hand or placed upon one’s head, the skeptical will realize that such elegance will heighten one’s state of being. When surrounded by good things, good things happen. GTM adds purpose to your choice of clothes and freedom to explore how you put your self in this world.
