From The Desk Of The BoDeans: Cheating

I Can’t Stop is the latest release from the legendary BoDeans, who started making music together more than 30 years ago. The band will be touring throughout the rest of the year, but in the meantime, frontman Kurt Neumann, multi-instrumentalist Sam Hawksley and drummer Kenny Aronoff will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

7Cheating

Neumann: I recently saw a survey, regarding the whole “deflate-gate” situation, where 69 percent of the respondents said they thought that Tom Brady cheated. However, 61 percent said they still thought he was a “good” role model. And we’ve all heard about the biggest companies being exempt from paying taxes: GE, NFL, as well as religious organizations and non-profits. While everyday Americans are put to the wall for every frickin’ penny. We suggest that “insider trading” is wrong. But if you’re on Wall Street, a financial investment corporation or a top executive in a company, you know that it’s a part of everyday life to have, and act on the “insider” information available. Politicians in the House and Senate have great, affordable insurance and benefits and self-imposed pay raises while denying everyday Americans, and more importantly the veterans who have sacrificed for and served this country, the same. And even in my industry, artists are able to manipulate charts and radio to command the most attention for their projects. So isn’t it time we stop telling our kids that “cheaters never prosper”? Because, as far as I can see, cheaters really prosper. Like “it’s just business.” It really is the American way. The human way. We should stop sending our kids mixed messages. Maybe better to say cheaters might not live happy lives. But in this world, this day and age, they definitely prosper. We should be honest about it. Wait … honest about cheating? Ah … I get it. Never mind.
