Every Saturday, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 32-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
“When You Build A House Without Doors”
I built a house without doors
and ended up on the outside
when I’d sunk the final nail
On the outside, on the inside, on this side
I built a ladder without steps
To climb up to the window I’d set too high
On the outside, on the inside, on this side
I made a shovel to burrow down and in
I shaped the metal to a point and hit solid rock
On the outside, on the inside, on this side
I tired to peel back the wall with a crowbar
Wrecking what I thought I’d finished
On the outside, on the inside, on this side
When you build a house without doors
I ended up on the outside
